4 Luv of Poetry
4 Luv of Poetry should be your first stop for information on spoken word in DC. The site includes details for all of the regularly occuring metro area open mics, a list of upcoming slam competitions, bios of local artists, and calls for submissions. Though 4 Luv began as a source for DC spoken word only, it now lists some readings and competitions happening across the country as well.
Broke Baller
Broke Baller is brought to you by Droopy, a local poet and host of the popular Spit Dat open mic night Thursdays at Java Head. There's a lot of great poetry on the site, some fun goodies to explore, and links to other area poets.
DC Slam Team
The DC Slam Team is made up of some of the best slam poets in the DC area. They host a weekly event at Teaism and compete nationally. Their site includes information about the team as well as local slam poetry events, news, and links.
Mothertongue
Mothertongue is an organization dedicated to encouraging local DC women's voices and to providing a space for those voices to be heard. In addition to hosting an open mic at Stompin' Grounds (Eastern Market) on the first Sunday of every month, Mothertongue also hosts special spoken word events whose proceeds go to community-based non-profits that focus on the lives of women and girls in DC.
The Poet's Den
This group of poets and musicians seek to empower their communities through creativity and expression, with performances that cross age boundaries. The Poet's Den hosts events with special guest artists, local performers, and first-time readers.
